This presentation proposes the Engineer in Residence (EiR) programme, to encourage direct engineer-to-engineer interaction between research and education networks, through direct visits. EiR formalises the process of arranging and executing such visits. We propose that light-weight arrangements with a host organisation should be completed in advance, stating at minimum: start date, duration and goals. The majority of the planning effort should be placed on the visitor, and the duration of the visit is negotiable, but is envisioned to be between two to three weeks. It is envisaged that every NREN around the world would have a desk that is dedicated to the Engineer in Residence program, to be regularly filled with visiting engineers from other NRENs.
