The new SUNET network SunetC that is currently being rolled out will stitch the optical and IP layer together by fully utilizing coherent 100G interfaces in routers (using no transponders in the optical equipment). With 100G coherent technology being commoditized we identified an opportunity to limit the amount of components in the network and by that lower capex and errors in the network. Another goal we had was future-proofing the network with as high OSNR as possible and utilizing only gridless components. One of the difficulties building a network like this is that it breaks some of the business models of the vendors of the equipment another is controlling the network. The presentation will focus on the strategy we took to handle and/or mitigate these difficulties and the special optical spectrum services we plan to offer.
